We held our annual coat give-away event on Dec. 13th at the First Baptist Church of Cornelia. Families were able to select coats, jackets, hoodies, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and other miscellaneous items for each member of their family.
Family Connection collects donated items throughout the year from community partners, such as Circle of Hope Thrift Stores and Habersham County Schools, as well as from anonymous individuals. The SPED class at Habersham Central High School so graciously washes and dries items that need cleaning. Mountain Education Charter High School in Demorest gives us closet space to store the items until December. We spend many hours of preparation throughout the year and the day before the event setting up but it is always a pleasure because we know what it means to the families we serve. This year we helped 187 families stay warm during winter. We received volunteer help for the event from our board members, Habersham School employees, Farm Bureau of Demorest, Habersham County 4-H, and adult students of an ESL program.
